Painting From Photos - Yes or No ??

For me the answer to the title of this entry is definitely yes. It has taken me quite some time to understand how to interpret a photo and to actually make a painting and not a picture. Here are some tips on how to be successful at this.

- This may sound like a contradiction, but the most important point would be to paint from life whenever possible (this should be possible for every painter - you can paint in/outside, a landscape, a still life, a figure....). These skills learned are a necessity for any painter and especially those that wish to paint from a photo.

- Only paint from photos you have taken.

- Use the photo as a point of departure. This sounds simple, but is most difficult to achieve. Don't be a slave to the photo.

- Do several sketches of your photo to determine a good composition.

- Start small and limit your time (otherwise you will copy every detail in the photo).

- Start with the large light and dark shapes (this is half the job!!)

- The darks in photos are not black, they are a color. Mix an appropriate light and dark color and then add the mid values.

The Path to Finding Your Style

When I began the journey of becoming a full-time professional artist, I took numerous workshops and almost always heard the instructor speak of "finding your style"!! This was the most difficult concept to understand, but CW Mundy made it most clear by stressing how important it was and is to put miles and miles of canvas behind you. What does that mean? Well, for me it meant painting daily..... beginning with small studies ... different subject matter....moving to larger sizes ..... but most importantly not being afraid to use my materials. Most of my readers may know that I like to paint like a millionaire... (no I am not a millionaire), but my palette tells another story. It is LOADED and ready to go!!! If you want paint with texture, then put out more than a dot of paint! Believe it or not, there is a correlation between what is on your palette and what is on your canvas ...

Eventually, I began to learn more about myself and what really motivated me to paint. I continue to grow through the miles of canvas and am always amazed at how much each painting teaches me. Another important point I have learned is not to labor over a bad painting.... my recommendation is to get rid of it! Yes, slash it and throw it away. A fresh canvas motivates with hope of new revelations!

Challenge Yourself

I continue to challenge myself with different concepts and have found a new method of working that allows me to build upon each learning expierence. There are about 15 paintings in my studio in various stages of completion. Each painting represents a different set of problems to solve and skills learned in one painting are easily incorporated into the next!! I easily move from one painting to the next and if one is not working, I turn it away from my view or scrape it for a beautiful "ghost painting".

Examples of challenges might include:

- high key/low key
- all neutrals, ranging from cool to warm
- all neutrals with a touch of high chroma in key areas
- high horizon/low horizon
- time limit (30 min studies - yes, I really do use a timer)
- limited palette
- all knife work
- all brush work

Evaluate the Progression of your Work

I find it a necessity to review my works in progress frequently. I use a variety of methods to evaluate. The most important is to step back after a few marks. I look for values, flow, composition etc. Also, hanging directly opposite from my easel is a large mirror that allows a "reverse view". I might also take a photo and review it in Black and White. If you wear glasses, take them off or simply squint. There are many options, but the important part is to remember that every new mark you make on your canvas affects the "whole" and often requires changes all over the canvas.

Whose telling the Story?

From experience, I can tell you that we all approach our easel with great intentions but along the way "our story" risks being suffocated by well meant "suggestions" from our audience. It's easy to fall into the trap of painting for admirers. Thoughts such as: "At my last show they really loved the blues.... so I think I'll paint more blues..."; "No, nobody likes orange... don't paint that!"; "Purple? - no way, no one will like purple!"; hinder creativity. And so, I must ask myself whose painting am I painting? Mine or my audience? Whose story am I telling? Is it really mine? Sadly, too many of us have stories that will never be painted, because we are either painting to please others or worse yet, plagiarizing art. When I am at my easel, I am keenly aware of these pitfalls and strive to maintain the concept that each painting must convey "my story".

Like most artists, I don't just walk into my studio, pick up my brushes and paint a fabulous painting. Although I show up for "work" everyday, I need to plan ahead and have ideas to work from. These ideas are derived from many sources, e.g. my oil sketches, my own photographs, setups, models etc. But sometimes my ideas are sabotaged by well meaning "suggestions" from others. Suggestions can come in many forms and are usually well meant. They can include canvas size, color, design, paint application, etc. and can virtually paralyze an artist's creativity, These ideas invade the creative thought process and can hinder a truthful execution. I find it important to ask myself the question "Who am I painting for?" Of course it should be myself. When I am struggling with a painting and it has become labored and overworked, I can guarantee that well meant "suggestions" have taken over and pleasing others has taken priority over pleasing myself. Once I recognize this (and almost always scrape the canvas or simply toss it), I am free to move in the direction that makes my art unique. I remind myself daily to stay true to myself and thus continue to create my own vision. I alone am the author of my work and happy to sign my name to a "Barbara Flowers Original".

It has been quite some time since I last updated my blog, but I have a great excuse!!! I just returned from an extended vacation in France (Paris and Alsace Region) as well as Germany!! I did not paint for THREE weeks!!! All along I was gathering photographic references and soaking in the European lifestyle which I miss so much. For those of you that don't know, I have dual citizenship (German/American) and spent most of my life in Europe, so it is my second home.

I am recharged with new visions and ready to spend some serious time in the studio working in "solitude", where I seem to be able to develop my best work.

2011 is going to be a busy year starting with a solo show in April at the beautiful Watts Fine Art Gallery in Zionsville, IN. Also, in April you'll be able to attend the last of my full day demonstrations and a solo Show at the Corse Gallery and Atelier in Jacksonville, FL. For those of you that have attended any type of workshop at the Corse Gallery, you know Eileen Corse hosts most professional workshops and wonderful shows!!!

Is your studio your "haven" or "torture chamber"?

The question for this blog comes from some blog comments and other artists asking how to overcome fear and dread in the studio. I feel fortunate to say that my studio is a "haven", a place to go and give voice to my ideas. A place to make mistakes that only I see and that are so important to the growth of an artist. I surround myself with some of my favorite work as well as a few select failures. The work I consider "successful" boosts my confidence and the failures challenge me to always move forward. Small studies provide color/compositional information that may lead to larger works, long lists with ideas are always handy -the list goes on.

My studio was not always this way, when I first began painting on a professional level, I went through a period where I almost dreaded going to work. I questioned most of my decisions ... the size of the canvas, the color choices, the paint application, the subject matter ....etc. My husband gave me some of the best advice during this time and that was to treat each day in the studio as a learning expierence!! It works for me, I gave up trying to analyze every painting and simply began to paint (of course using good planning and sound foundations)!!

I have learned that a good day in the studio involves trusting yourself and always enter with a sincere desire to learn more about your profession!!

The above painting is a small study from my recent trip to Italy!!! The violet bush was a very large sage bush!!!

An American Morning

This painting is being packed and shipped to a show at Figure Eight Island, hosted by Tyler White Gallery the end of June. Sometimes, I struggle with a title for paintings and other times titles are there before the painting has even been started. This was such a painting. The American Flag on the blue boat and the palette of predominately blue, white and touch of red supported my decision.

Manchmal faellt es mir schwer Titel fuer meine Gemaelde zu formulieren; jedoch gelegentlich formulieren sich die Titel von selbst bevor die Bilder ueberhaupt gemalt sind!!! Bei diesem Bild war dies der Fall. Die Amerikanische Fahne und die Farbskala von ueberwiegend Blau, Weiss und einen Tupfer Rot trugen zu dem Wahl dieses Titels bei.

What Kind of Painter Are You?

I recently had the pleasure of traveling and painting in Italy. During this trip, my everyday "Studio-Life" seemed like a million miles away with the exception of checking emails. An email invitation to join a palette knife painting group brought me back to my everyday life and led me to consider the question "What Kind of Painter Am I?" After much thought, I've concluded:

I am neither a palette knife painter nor a brush painter. I am a painter!

I am neither a figurative painter nor a still life painter. I am a painter!

I am neither a colorist nor a tonalist. I am a painter!

I think you get the point. As a painter, I seek out that which strikes an emotion within me. The emotion comes from seeing interesting arrangements of shapes and colors; the greys of a winter day; the gesture of a figure; the subtle colors of white flowers; and the list goes on!! In fact, the list is long and continues to grow such that a lifetime is not enough to paint all the concepts! Brushes and painting knives are simply tools to express concepts. Personally, I like to have all options open when I enter the studio and not be limited by tools or the subject matter. I find this allows me the freedom to explore and be more creative.

I am a painter. (Period!)

Just returned from a two week visit to Italy!!! What a fabulous country!! I travelled from Venice to Rome and painted in Tuscany. Despite the many rainy days and even hail, the sun did shine and made Italy all the more beautiful. I am overloaded with inspiration and can't wait to return to the studio!

I am excited to be among the first to own Raymar's latest BLUE wet panel carrier!!! This small sturdy little guy holds 12 wet paintings, max. 6x8 and has arrived just in time to make it's debut in Italy for some plein air painting!!
The painting next to the box is "Study, Stripes in Montmatre", 6x8.

The above painting has been selected as a finalist in the Raymar March 2010 Competition. Eric Rhoads, Owner and Editor in Chief of the magazine "Fine Art Connoisseur" served as the judge. His comments on this painting are as follows:

"This painting is fun. It feels like a painting of Paris should feel, it is bright and has a frivolous feel, full of movement and repose. I love the variations in color, the brush and knife work and the depth. What really makes this painting feel different is the building on the left, which curves into the painting. A straight column here, which would be the natural tendency for a painter, would have killed the movement."

During the recent Gala at the Huntsville Museum, my husband and I had the honor of visiting with long time collectors, Lore and Alan from Huntsville, Alabama. They extended an invitation to their stunning home to view their collection of my paintings and to see them "hanging". This is always exciting for an artist and I so appreciate Lore and Alan taking the time to visit with us. Above are collectors, Lore and Alan along with two paintings displayed in their foyer.

Waehrend dem Gala in dem Huntsville Museum, hatten mein Mann und ich die Ehre mit langzeit Sammler, Lore und Alan (Huntsville, Alabama) einen kleinen Besuch abzustatten. Wir wurden eingeladen, ihr wunderschoenes Haus mit der Kollektion meiner Bilder zu sehen. So etwas ist immer eine ausgesprochene Ehre fuer einen Kuenstler. In dem o.g. Thank you to Eileen Corse for hosting a wonderful Three Woman Show at the beautiful Eileen Corse Gallery in Jacksonville. After the show, I taught a three day still life workshop with 18 wonderful students. I always feel like I learn as much as my students do, as I am constantly having to verbalize and thus reinforce my approach.

Due to time constraints, I will not be conducting any future workshops and instead focus on my studio work. However, I will be offering "Teaching Demonstrations". Join me for these entertaining and educational demonstrations, where I will guide you through my approach from concept to finish. Topics will include design, color choices, expressiveness and finding your style.

Huntsville Museum Gala

The Huntsville Museum Gala will begin this coming week with several events. The Gala Art Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, Gala Dinner and Live Auction on Thursday and finally the Gala Cocktail Bash and Silent Auction on Saturday!!! I will be attending the Cocktail Bash on Saturday along with AH (this is what my husband calls himself at such functions and it stands for "Artist's Husband", but he also answers to Jerry)! Looking forward to meeting all the wonderful supporters of this beautiful Museum. Below the translation in German, I am sorry to say that I forgot to write in German in the last few posts. My friends and family in Germany look forward to this and so here it is!!!

I am honored to be represented by the Huntsville Museum as their featured artist for this year's Museum Gala. The exhibit will include twenty-one new paintings, ranging from still-life to figurative and landscape as well as cityscapes. All the cityscapes are scenes from Europe (where I am from), the still-life paintings are all painted from life as well as the figurative pieces. The Exhibit opens on February 14th.

Dieses Jahr wurden meine Kunstwerke vom Huntsville Museum (in Alabama) zum Anlass von ihrem Museum Gala zur Ausstellung auserwaehlt. This is in memory of my wonderful Father-in-law, Rev. Joseph E. Flowers, who entered eternal life on January 18, 2010. He received so many beautiful flowers and I took this white rose as a remembrance and painted it before I dried it.

In Erinnering an meinen wunderbaren Schwiegervater, Rev. Joseph E. Flowers, der am 18 Januar 2010 verstorben ist. Von den vielen Blumen anlaesslich der Beerdigung, nahm ich diese weisse Rose als Erinnering and malte sie bevor ich sie trocknen liess.

In this painting my hope is to convey how the activity in Paris is at street level (the colors, sounds, aromas etc.). This busy life at street level is somehow balanced by the calm, neutral colors of the buildings and then topped with the wonderful rich rooftops. This is a scene of Rue de Buci.

In diesem Bild moechte ich zeigen, wie sich das taegliche Leben in Paris auf Strassen-Ebene abspielt (die Farben, die Geraeuche, die Aromas usw). Diese belebeten Strassen werden irgendwie durch die neutrale Farben der Gebaeuden ausgeglichen und hinzu kommen naturlich die wunderbaren Farben der Daecher. Dies ist eine Scene von Rue de Buci.

A Painting with a Story

"Viewing the Isenheim Altarpiece, Colmar, France", oil, 12x9

The Isenhiem Altarpiece is an altarpiece painted by German artist "Matthias Gruenewald" around 1512. It is on display at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, France. This is considered to be Gruenewald's largest work as well as his "Masterpiece". He was commissioned to paint it for the monastery of St. Anthony near Colmar. This monastery specialized in hospital work, in particular - skin diseases and the altar piece was intended to help the sick to shift their focus from their suffering to Jesus Christ and His suffering on the cross.

I have visited the Museum several times and am always in awe of this piece. To think how many people it was intended to minister to during the 1500's and beyond!!! This is a painting with a story - as was the case with most paintings that were commissioned by the early church, because the average person could not read. These works were meant to illustrate the story of the bible!

It seems an appropriate painting for this time of year - by that I mean to refocus from the event of Christmas and all the stress that it may bring to the reason - Jesus Christ.

Award of Excellence at OPA Eastern Show

I am thrilled that the above painting received the Award of Excellence at the OPA, Eastern Show held at the Eileen Corse Gallery in Jacksonville. CW Mundy was the juror of awards. It was a beautiful show with awe inspiring work. I am humbled and honored that my painting was selected to receive an award. CW Mundy commented on each award painting. On this particular painting he commented on how I captured the impressionistic style and the "essence of" (and much more that I cannot recall since I was so nervous). This is exactly what I strive for in my work and am honored for the recognition.

A small figurative piece. Here I was interested in capturing the feeling of the cool light coming through a window to the left of the model and a table lamp casting warm light on the right. Although I usually paint still life subject matter for months, then cityscapes for months and finally figurative ... I am mixing things up and painting mainly cityscapes and figurative right now. It feels like a good mix, since much of my cityscape work includes figures!!

I just realized that I have not updated my blog in over a week. Fall seems to be filled with deadlines for shows and that is what I have been doing. Above is a new painting for the Erika Reed Show in Atlanta. Painting is available through Anne Irwin Fine Art.

However, back to the title of this entry. Today I received an email from an artist who paints with artists in his/her area of the US and says that because of this many artist's work tends to look similar. I do believe when you are first learning that your work will reflect the instructors/instructors you have taken classes from. The key to making art that reflects your personality and your vision is putting miles of canvas behind you - alone in your studio!!!! There you can work from life (still life or model) where you can best learn to establish good working skills. Don't work from photos unless you have a clear understanding of working from life (that does include plein air work too, but first studio work). For me there is nothing more exciting than the idea that I have uninterrupted days of studio time. I know this represents time to learn more. Learning never stops and style should continue to develop, always being inquisitive.... I like to ask the question what if....???

The above little painting was an answer to what if. I had been painting some Paris paintings and decided to see how much I could abbreviate the scene and still capture the essence of Paris. I think I did just that. Please enjoy.

Here is the full image of the painting where I began using a new palette of paint! Had to crop the image more on the right side because of the photo quality. Will post a better quality photo at a later date.

I am working on paintings for two upcoming shows and need all the work to be completed by December. Working under this type of deadline and providing Galleries with additional new work requires even more studio time than my usual 5-6 days. So, I paint longer hours. I love my work and don't mind the extra hours, but I also find that I am suffering from "Idea" overload - so many great ideas and not enough time to capture it all. To stay focused, I try and keep a notebook of ideas and sketches for future use! Would love to hear ideas on how other artists maintain their focus!!

Painting Your Own Vision

I want to take just a moment to discuss "Painting your OWN Vision". I recently completed a commission of a subject matter that I would not normally paint, but felt completely inspired to paint it (otherwise I would not have accepted the offer). The painting turned out to be all that I had hoped for and the client was just as pleased. Then came the possible recommendation by a well meaning person, to paint more of this subject! Trying to please this person, I attempted to paint more... what a disaster!!! I spent at least 6 hours yesterday working on something that had no foundation, no inspiration and every stroke I applied was laborious!!! By the time my husband got home, I had at least 3 tubes of paint on this thing and it looked uninspired. I prepared dinner, then back into the studio to see if I could rescue this project, but it was not meant to be. I put it aside and painted a little 4x4 painting that I have been inspired for some time now to do and guess what .... it is a little gem (that painting took less than an hour). I know better than to paint what somebody else suggests, but I did it anyways and have hopefully done this the last time!!!! Above is a painting I really treasure. It was a very warm day in Riquewihr and this couple and their basset hound were taking a break at the fountain. Enjoy!

P.S. I scraped the uninspired work this morning before starting a new painting and will probably even toss the canvas!!! It is better to surround oneself by sucessful paintings in the studio. They encourage me on the bad days and show me how to improve on the good days!!

It's Chilly in Florida

It has felt like fall the last few days, the humidity is gone and there is a crispness in the morning air that is so very welcome after a long, hot and very humid summer. This little painting reminds me of the very few times when a hat a scarf are needed here in Florida!!! I am and always have been drawn to the type of weather I grew up with in Germany. Basically, mild to freezing spring weather, hot to cold summers, warm to cold falls and freezing winters with rainy/foggy days sprinkled liberally in between!!!

Working with a different Palette

One day last week, I found myself relying on old color information (kind of a mindless mixing mode), not really relying on what I was seeing and not interpreting this information into the language of paint. My remedy was to scape off all the paint and put out a new color palette. Guess what, it worked!!! I found myself seeing and interpreting and above all finding different ways to achieve the colors I needed. It was fun and inspiring and it proves how important it is to make some changes to spurn on creativity!!!! I am only showing a detail of the painting at this time.

Painting Juried into 2009 Eastern OPA

I am pleased to announce that the above painting has been juried into this year's Eastern Oil Painters of America Exhibition. This Show will be held at the Corse Gallery in Jacksonville, Florida. Opening Reception is scheduled for Nov. 20th, 6-9pm for fellow artists, collectors and the press.

Workshop

Thank you to all the students who participated in last week's workshop. Although we all worked very hard, we still managed to find time to get to know each other and share lots of laughter!!!

I love to travel in France and have just finished reading "I'll Never Be French" by Mark Greenside. It is something I can recommend to those who have lived for extended periods in Europe and the United States (or not). The story takes place in Brittany and of course now I can't wait to go there and paint, so that is the next destination on my list!!

Here are two of six new paintings now available at Tyler White Gallery in Greensboro, NC.

The painting "Proud" will be part of an exhibit to benefit "Red Dog Farm" in Greensboro. The reception will be held this Friday, Sept. 11th at the Tyler White Gallery.

"Nestled in the Woods" is a painting of what once was the "Forsthaus" (Ranger's Lodge) near the village I grew up in. (in Germany). It is really that quaint there and whenever I hike this path, I cannot help but remember the fairy tales my German grandmother would tell us (of course Hansel and Gretel)!!

This is a figurative piece that I am quite fond of. This piece is a good demonstration of what I discuss in my workshops and that is making connections between shapes to unify the painting. Students that have taken my workshops will recognize where these connections are (value connections). I had the opportunity to paint with some friends yesterday and we discussed the importance of making connections to avoid a "busy" painting. A subject that is too involved to discuss on my blog, but you'll receive more information in my workshop.

Another small painting for the Red Dog Fundraiser show at Tyler White Gallery in Greensboro (Sept. 11, 2009). Painting these small paintings for the show has helped me realize how important it is for an artist to "refocus". My "refocus" was the challenge to rethink a particular subject matter, namely animals and paint them they way I see them. (that would be with other people since I do not own a pet at this time, but have always loved dogs). In this painting I wanted to capture the relationship between the young man and his eager dog!

Recently, Tyler White Gallery invited me to participate in a show to raise funds for "Red Dog Farm" (Animal Rescue Network) in Greensboro, N.C. As I was planning what to paint, I came across a photo I had taken during my last trip to Paris and it seemed very appropriate. Parisians love their dogs!!! They are everywhere, in all shapes and sizes! This young woman looked so stylish in her red coat, big handbag and a stately dog!!!

Cafe People

I thoroughly enjoy painting cafe scenes. I grew up with the cafe culture being a part of my everyday life. It is "people watching" at it's best!! In this painting I am focusing on the activity in the cafe area and only using shapes in the background that will support and not take away from the "story". Apart from the cafe crowd, you see a woman in the back left walking and to the right a group of people "huddling", probably friends that just happened to meet each other after their trip to the local open air market, which was just around the corner to the right. Also, you will notice how I used spots of more intense color in the area of the "cafe people" and used cooler colors to recede. Please enjoy. Featured Artist, Huntsville Museum Gala 2010

Painting "loose" portraits

This is a small head study I did today of my grandson. No, he didn't pose for the painting, I was lucky to get him to be still for five photos!!! This is a good example of how I love to do a "portrait", nice and loose, I barely used any lines to begin the painting. Instead, I relied on placing one shape next to the other. Also, I limited my palette to Transparent Red, Quinacridone Red, Hansa Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Green, Chromatic Black and Titanium White.

Le Tour de France in Colmar Today

I am so excited to be watching the Tour de France going through my favorite area in France, the Alsace Region and one city they will be passing through is Colmar. This city has an area called "Petite Venice" which is a beautiful old region in the city with canals. You can even take a boat ride through the canals, but be careful to duck when you go under the bridge! I sat at a cafe in Petite Venice and experienced the above view, fabulous!!!! Can't wait to go back. Also, the Tour is passing through Munster France (they have the most smelly cheese in the world, but oh so good, if you can get past the smell). We stay at a hotel in Hohrodberg (see links on this page)!!

Mocha Cup and Pansies

In this painting, I like the way the way the light and dark masses rise and fall. By that I mean, how the pansy mass rises up into the light background and the light mocha cup goes down into the darker mass creating a pleasing rhythm. All brushwork on this one!

Red Chair

In my opinion this small painting is packed with emotion. One red chair, empty - a table large enough for only one!! It speaks of solitude, a time to renew and relax, peacefulness, perhaps a time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future. This is at a beautiful restaurant in Illhaeusern, France. The restaurant is located on the river Ill and surrounded by beautiful willow trees.

Summertime Blues

This is a painting I recently completed with fish leftover from a large commissioned "Fish Painting". I am really pleased how I was able to break up the large mass of fish and yet maintain the mass. Also I like the variety of color in the fish against the two other more simplified large shapes. I always buy fresh fish to paint from and you can imagine what several days of this type of work does to the atmosphere in the studio. So enjoy this one for July 4th, because I am shutting the studio down and enjoying the holidays!!!

Summer in Florida

It is definitely summer in Florida - I just need to step outside and the humidity almost takes my breath away. But living in Florida has it's advantages, the light is very bright and of course Panama City has the most beautiful beach!!!

Please enjoy the new posting! This painting was done from a photo that I took last year when I was commissioned to do some beach paintings. I needed some models and hired my neighbors young sons to "model". They enjoyed the idea of being in a painting and of course they loved having a paying job.

These two paintings are from my last trip to Paris. Although, the visit was during the first part of April, it was freezing cold. I still remember the cold when I paint. I enjoyed using a harmony of blue/green grays to relay the feeling of the weather.

Painting and Fear of Failure

I frequently have this discussion with fellow artists and students "Fear of Failure". This Fear grips us often as we approach the easel and prevents us from reaching our full potential. It keeps us from answering the all important question "What if.... ?" Without this question, we will never know what we could have done, we'll never venture beyond what we already know. We'll stop being able to "see" and instead rely on what we know. I could go on and on about this subject.

I think we have all been in this place, but I guard against it by forcing myself to paint new subject matter and switching my colors and always asking "What if...?" So what if the painting is not good enough for inventory, the understanding I will have gained will be much more valuable than a "good" painting.

Anyways, the above new little one, a night scene in Paris, is one of those paintings I have wanted to paint for a long time, but needed to wait until I had a more clear vision and understanding of how to simplify a busy scene. I did not allow fear to enter my studio, but just pushed forward with my vision and I am so pleased with the results. Enjoy a night in Paris!
